SARAGONA · TIARA M
Yeguada es desig ‘s breeding program is based on 12 of the world’s best breeding lines. Twelve lines led by the finest mares of show jumping horses.
SARAGONA · TIARA M
Founder of the ROOSAKKER line, she has become one of the most fashionable broodmares commercially since the rise of ICSI in reproduction—an exceptionally well-deserved distinction.
No fewer than four generations of top-level sport horses appear throughout every branch of her pedigree.
The pedigree of USHA VAN ‘T ROOSAKKER can undoubtedly be considered one of the most important internationally. The number of horses competing above 1.50 m it contains is difficult to match, as is the number that have reached the 1.60 m level.
This family includes ELECTRA VAN ‘T ROOSAKKER (1.60 m; by ATOUCHA out of a DARCO mare), who, when crossed with a highly blooded stallion, marks the beginning of our involvement with the Roosakker line.
Following our first foals born in 2020, new additions are expected during 2021 in order to expand our program and properly reflect the importance of USHA in our sport.
This initial branch is therefore complemented by the line of GEENA VAN’T ROOSAKKER (1.55 m; by BABBE out of a KANNAN mare), which comes to us through the influence of HEARTBREAKER as sire.
Another outstanding broodmare of French origin, whose descendants are somewhat less established, though the line is clearly on the rise.
A highly Thoroughbred-influenced dam, she has produced stallion sons registered in various studbooks, as well as top-level competitors within her first two generations, including an Olympic champion, RAHOTEP DE TOSCANE.
Our first investment in this line comes through a mare who has demonstrated her exceptional quality from day one: GLORIA CASA BALLONGA. She is by VAGABOND DE LA POMME, a stallion descending from another of our distinguished lines (QERLY CHIN), and out of CUPCAKE DU BORGET.
The dam line of this mare has been awarded a perfect 10 out of 10 by the ANSF. CUPCAKE excelled in the ANSF mare final, also winning the awards for Beauty and for Gaits and Conformation. Her addition to our broodmare band represents our second commitment to the quality of this line, whose full potential remains to be discovered.
GLORIA, the brilliant winner of the Selle Français Championship at the age of two, further distinguished herself at the Spanish Championship at three years old (scoring 9.25 for jumping). From the very beginning of her training, she has impressed us with her intelligence, rideability, power, jumping talent, and remarkable beauty.
Her siblings have matched her success, once again triumphing in the French final, such as ISAURA, while FULL OPTION earned notable recognition during the ANSF stallion approval.
This exceptional mare forms the foundation of our breeding program within this other great French line. We hope that GLORIA will also succeed in sport and enable us to confirm our confidence in FANNY DU MURIER, alongside CUPCAKE.
There is little I can say about this line. Unlike some others in Belgium today, it is not in the spotlight.
Yet, at the time of writing, FEMKE P ranks fourth among broodmares on Hippomundo, immediately behind two other lines developed at Es Desig: our icon UELEME and CORDULA DE LAUBRY.
The leading producer from this family is LINOTTE DE SOHAN, whose importance continues to grow steadily through offspring competing at the highest level.
I believe, however, that this line has been somewhat neglected by the son of its creator. Perhaps he considered it less valuable than it ultimately proved to be and, like many who strike out on their own, has preferred to champion other bloodlines rather than uphold what was started at home.
Clearly, I have my differences with that son—haha!
My encounter with this family was purely accidental… and the result of love at first sight.
While visiting what would become an acquisition for our stud (GLORIA, later a French champion from the FANNY DU MURIER line), I came across a little yearling filly, platinum blonde, and instantly fell in love.
She was shaggy and in that awkward stage of growth between one and one and a half years of age, yet she reminded me of one of the first mares I admired when I began traveling to see horses.
I did not stop until I succeeded in acquiring that little blonde filly, who had already been sold to Belgium.
Whether through genetics or good fortune, the blonde grew into a force of nature—spirited, seemingly tireless, charismatic, and an impeccable jumper.
She turned out to be the most special youngster in the stud. She is the most admired mare in the club and captures everyone’s attention: HOPE, a descendant somewhat lower down the pedigree of FEMKE P.
Soon afterward, we were able to acquire her dam as a broodmare, as well as her brother for sport. To the foals of HOPE and her dam we eventually added a direct daughter of LINOTTE DE SOHAN—also blonde!
So we are going to blend high fashion with show jumping, breeding a generation of explosive, beautiful, and exceptionally talented blonde jumpers.
This is the line with which it all began at Es Desig: a force of nature, an outstanding broodmare, and a remarkable competitor.
While 5* Grand Prix classes were the stage of her sporting success, she has been even more exceptional as a broodmare, earning the top position in Hippomundo’s ranking of the world’s best dams.
Her numerous offspring have all reached a high competitive level without exception. Yet the true extent of this great mare’s merit deserves a closer look. Only three of her offspring were ridden by professional riders; all the others attained their highest level with amateurs. As so often happens, some promising progeny suffered misfortune during their rise through the sport (Kaeleme, Tandeme, Top Lulu, Voyager of Lulu, among others), while others were retired for breeding.
Another factor attesting to UELEME’s genetic quality is the choice of stallions bred to her. They were generally not among the most fashionable sires of their time. Whenever outstanding sires were used, however—as with her two daughters by QUIDAM DE REVEL—the resulting quality was exceptional.
It is said that we own her finest daughter, none other than one by QUIDAM DE REVEL, arguably the sire of broodmares whose influence endures most strongly in elite breeding today.
Having already reached the 1.55 m level at the beginning of her eight-year-old season, she went on to win 1.50 m Grand Prix classes with a 17-year-old amateur rider. A serious injury, while she was still very young, sadly ended her sporting career just as that same rider was preparing to make her debut at the 1.60 m level.
Yet in only a year and a half together, TOP LULU amassed an impressive list of victories and left a lasting impression through her quality, blood, courage, charisma, and distinctive elegance. She formed a particularly captivating partnership, one that we greatly miss at Es Desig.
These qualities are already evident in her first two offspring, and we hope to see them continue in future generations.
Our confidence in the UELEME line is reflected in the addition of a second mare, a daughter of TANDEME, who will bring new dimensions to our principal family. We also hope soon to establish another branch through a further daughter of UELEME.
The TOP LULU branch is the most exclusive within our stud, and her first generation of daughters will remain with us for both sport and breeding.
VALENTINO DE HUS (1.60 m), a grandson of UELEME and PANAMA DU SEIGNEUR, who competed at the European Championships with a young amateur rider, embodies the success of two of our lines. For this reason, he too has been incorporated into our breeding program.
Having passed away at the age of twenty-six, her legacy will endure for generations. As a pioneer in modern reproductive techniques, that legacy is also extraordinarily extensive.
The visionary and exemplary De Muze breeding program regards her as one of the cornerstones of its renowned success.
She was a daughter of JALISCO B out of NIFRANE (by IFRANE X), combining some of the finest Anglo-Arab bloodlines, whose influence enriches our stud as it does nearly all of our families.
Reviewing her produce restores one’s faith in genetics, for it reveals an extraordinary number of top-level horses and the remarkable consistency with which quality is transmitted through subsequent generations.
It is truly overwhelming to behold and serves as yet another reminder of the breeder’s only certainty before horses are ridden and their jumping ability is proven: our greatest asset is genetics.
FRAGRANCE is one of those mares who embodies this truth. Genetics means passing on gifts, and those gifts lie deep within each horse, beyond appearance and musculature—its fire, heart, courage, explosiveness, its very genes.
She represents a genuinely sensational family, one about which one could speak for hours, and whose offspring have reached the highest levels of sport.
Yet another truly exceptional broodmare.
Another of the great international broodmares. Beginning with her dam, LA BELLE, this is yet another breathtaking family line that, as one traces its descendants—daughter by daughter, granddaughter by granddaughter—cannot help but inspire a smile and the thought that perhaps two plus two really does equal four.
As with QERLY CHIN, my only regret is how long we must wait before this line provides us with new jewels galloping through the stud.
Several investments in this family are planned for 2021. For better or worse, time moves on, and if fortune favors us, we shall see the results.
All that remains is to wait. Yet, as with every family that forms the foundation of our breeding program, quality is certain to be present, for TA BELLE is arguably one of the most thoroughly proven lines in this respect.
The year 2020 marked the beginning of our commitment to this emblematic family, one that had in fact come very close to us several years earlier.
It is regrettable that we knew so little about breeding when we had the opportunity to acquire her dam, KERLY, and use her to perpetuate this great mare’s legacy. Our lack of knowledge prevented us from realizing that the new reproductive techniques—then not yet widely adopted—offered a perfectly viable path.
Years later, we corrected that mistake by investing in several embryos from one of her daughters.
There is still a long journey ahead and much to look forward to, with further commitments planned for 2021.
Yet I cannot help but regret my ignorance, which was even greater six years ago. Had we understood then what we know now, we might well be speaking today of several full siblings of QERLY CHIN grazing in our own pastures.
As of this writing, the Hippomundo broodmare ranking that I value so highly both confirms her worth and, in a sense, does her an injustice: she stands nineteenth in the world, while one daughter ranks sixth, a granddaughter eleventh, and a great-granddaughter fourteenth, with several other daughters following closely behind.
May our own descendants prove, as hers have throughout every branch of the family, worthy heirs to her legacy.
In our search for new great breeding families for Es Desig, PANAMA DU SEIGNEUR represents a fresh commitment to quality, one that her progeny already demonstrate in abundance.
Her offspring include competitors and winners at the highest international level, exhibiting the very qualities we seek, beyond mere power or other coarser attributes.
Charisma. Character. Heart. Quality.
Genetics—ultimately, that is what breeding is about: that invisible advantage which becomes unmistakably evident when a horse faces the greatest demands of the sport.
Thanks to the confidence that her current owners placed in our work, we were able to acquire one of her few and most promising daughters.
Shortly thereafter, the spectacular 2020 Zangersheide Foal Auction confirmed our conviction. Among a remarkable collection of foals boasting some of Belgium’s finest and most indisputable bloodlines, the auction’s top price was achieved by a daughter of PANAMA, further validating our hopeful choice.
We look forward to contributing to that recognition in due course through the first offspring of DIANA HERO Z.
This spectacularly built daughter by DIAMANT DE SEMILLY is complemented by “family” crosses with several of our other lines.
VALENTINO DE HUS, a grandson of the exceptional UELEME and PANAMA DU SEIGNEUR, unites the virtues of both. We hope that, as a stallion in our program, he will pass those qualities on to the other Es Desig families in which we have chosen to use him.
